Celebrate the love that children have for their mothers. Listen to the story Owl Babies by Martin Weddell. This is the story of three baby owls who wake up one night in their hole in the tree to find that their mother has gone, so they sit on the branch and wait, wondering when she will return. When at last she returns, they all bounce up and down with joy, welcoming her home.
Craft: Make your own picture of Percy, Sarah, and Bill waiting on a branch for their mother to return.
Supplies:
- black construction paper
- brown construction paper or brown paper bag
- brown, black, white, and orange construction paper
- black marker
- glue stick
- white acrylic glue
- large pom-pom or cotton ball
- clothespin
- small paper plate or bowl
- gold glitter glue (optional)
- circular foam brush
Instructions:
- Use a piece of brown paper for the branch for the owls to sit on. Crinkle up the paper into a ball and smooth it out to give it a tree branch texture.
- Glue the tree branch to the bottom of the black construction paper.
- Use a black marker or crayon to make the lines and knots of the tree branch.
- Attach a pom-pom to a clothespin for a dabber paintbrush. Pour the white paper into a small paper plate. Dab the pom-pom into the white paint to create the shape of each baby owl.
- Cut out brown 1-inch diameter circles and 1/2 inch black circles for the eyes. Also, cut out orange tringles for the peaks. The white circle in the eyes is just a hole punch. Glue all these pieces onto each owl baby.
- To create a nighttime look, use the circle foam brush to dab some gold glitter glue to create stars.
