A pantry tests the concepts of community, charity, justice and sharing economy. We have been tested. We have entered into an agreement of sorts that depends on our ability to trust. We must trust that what we have launched is helping to serve the community of people who need a helping hand. A pantry is not a solution to food insecurity nor is it a food bank. It is definitely not a personal grocery pick up. There has been some abuse of our good intentions but, we redirect our focus to those whom we are providing some relief.
ESG volunteers have endeavoured from the outset of this initiative to maintain a stable supply of items in our Little Free Pantry, using ESG Outreach donations and individual donations to ensure that the pantry has the same consistent amount of food placed in it each day. The food cupboards have been stocked in our church or items ordered and delivered to someone’s home or driveway Bags have been packed and a bag of food has been delivered each day to the pantry.
The pantry has been embraced by our neighbouring community and individual ESG members. It is heartening to see food regularly placed in the pantry. We receive a bread delivery bi-weekly and on Good Food Box days the Pantry is the recipient of fresh veg as well.
