Listen to the story Morning Has Broken by Eleanor Farjeon. Inspired by Psalm 118:24, it’s a popular song recorded by Cat Stevens.

Craft: Raised Salt Painting

Make a nature scene using a raised salt painting technique.

MATERIALS

  • Squeeze bottle of white glue
  • Table salt
  • Food colouring or watercolours
  • Droppers
  •  Card stock, watercolor paper or paper plates.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Use the squeeze bottle of glue to make a design onto your card stock.
  2. Carefully sprinkle salt onto cardstock until the glue is thoroughly covered. Let the excess salt fall away. A baking dish or tray helps to contain the salt.
  3. If using food colouring, add a few drops of food colour into a small cup and gently add some water.
  4. Dip your paintbrush into the food colouring water and gently touch the salt-covered glue lines. Watch the paint “magically” travel in both directions!

If you like, you can use a dropper or pipette instead of a paintbrush to add your watercolour paint.
  5. The drying process may take a day or two.

You can use this glue + salt + watercolor technique to write names/words, nature scenes, squiggles and scribbles, faces, and more!
